Around 3:15am on November 20, 2008 an explosion occurred at the All Points C operative elevator in Gothenburg. One man, an employee suffered some burns.

Kansas is known as The Sunflower State. Sunflowers can grow as wildflowers on the plains and it can be cultivated as a crop for uses as an oilseed, snacks, etc. Driving along Highway 36 in Mid-August somewhere in Republic County, we came across this sunflower field that was worth a stop for a few minutes.

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman traveled to Europe in October of 2008, and made history. He and Dr. Sally McKenzie of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln testified before the European Union Parliament on how genetically enhanced crops and livestock have worked to the benefit of consumers and the economy of Nebraska. This was the first time a sitting U.S. Governor has testified to the EU parliament. Also along for the trip were leaders in agricultural finance, grain, livestock and general farm organizations. The Rural Radio Network's Ken Rahjes was the ONLY member of the media to go along and report on the mission.

Up to six inches of rain fell in the south-central and southwest Nebraska area on May 22nd and 23rd. These pictures are from the southern Dawson County area south of Lexington and Darr.

Tornadic storms struck the central Nebraska area Thursday evening leaving behind a variety of damages but, no injuries.

Dawson County area high school students had the chance to learn about career opportunities in their local area during the Dawson County Career Fair and Expo held on Tuesday March 11, 2008.

Three of the candidates who want to replace retiring Senator Chuck Hagel met in one of the first debates at the Nebraska State Fair. The event was broadcast on the Rural Radio Network. Broadcaster Ken Rahjes served as moderator.

A ribbon cutting was held on August 21, 2008 to celebrate the expansion of the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles in Lexington.

Amerifuels Energy Solutions held a field day in Bertrand Nebraska. They were showing and discussing irrigation engines that operate on a high blend of ethanol. Continue to watch this Nebraska company grow and expand.

The 14th Annual Dawson County Relay for Life was held July 25th and 26th at Lake Helen in Gothenburg.

The annual live broadcast from the Nebraska State Fair took place in Ag Hall on Friday, August 29th. The Salute to Nebraska Agriculture and the University of Nebraska brings out a who's who list of leaders and we are proud of our association with the Nebraska State Fair, the University of Nebraska and all commodity groups and agriculture organizations across the state.

The 2008-2009 Nebraska FFA Officer team stopped by the KRVN/Rural Radio Network studios in Lexington. They talked to some staff members about broadcasting and were guests on Mid Day News Magazine.

Speaker of the Nebraska Unicameral, Mike Flood of Norfolk made several stops across Nebraska during the summer.

The Husker Sports Network's Sports Nightly crew stopped by the KRVN studios prior to broadcasting their show live from Faribanks International. On hand was Husker legend, Matt Davidson, Sports Nightly Host, Lane Grindle and Voice of the Huskers, Greg Sharpe.

The 11th Annual Cattlemen's Ball was held near Albion, June 6-8. The Niewohner family served as hosts on their ranch. The weather brought many challenges but in the end everything worked well and a great time was had by all and several thousands of dollars were raised for the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and local medical operations. Six time vocal group of the year Diamond Rio preformed to another sold out crowd on Saturday evening

The Nebraska Rural Radio Association met June 26th and 27th, 2008 in Lexington for the quarterly board meeting. The NRRA board was joined by the Nebraska Coop Council Board for a joint dinner meeting Thursday, June 26th, at Eric and Ruth Brown's Johnson Lake home.

2008 Beef Bash in Cozad. A Big THANK YOU to the Dawson County Cattlemen for once again grilling those great Nebraska hamburgers. Over 700 mouthwatering sandwiches were given away to young and old.

The Chairman of the Agriculture Committee of the European Commission, Neil Parrish made a quick trip to Nebraska on May 15th at the invitation of Director of Agriculture Greg Ibach. Mr. Parrish toured the ARDC near Meade and agriculture interests around Omaha.

US Senator Chuck Hagel decided not to run for re-election in 2008. Several candidates have dropped by our studio and we chronicle those visits.
